The Department of Business Development and Technology (BTECH) at Aarhus BSS, Aarhus University invites applications for a postdoctoral position in constructive design research for digital business development. The position is a fixed-term full-time employment (one year). The starting date is 1 January 2021 or as agreed upon.

Job description
The position is related (but not exclusively) to the H2020 NGI POINTER and IoTCrawler projects with specific responsibilities, including:
  1. Digital business development through constructive design research: Develop concepts, use cases, prototypes, tests and evaluations for IoT products and services using constructive design research (research through design) approaches and methodologies, including user-centred design, speculative design and service design.
  2. Project publishing in high-quality scientific journals: Through project development and research, collect and organise data systematically for publication of research articles and reports in appropriate journals as well as at conferences and exhibitions.
  3. Lab capacity building: The department is currently developing several laboratory spaces, including a prototyping laboratory. Development, support and activities around this lab are a core part of the activities. The lab will mainly host research projects on design and digital prototype development.
  4. Travel: Occasional travel is required (once per month).
Background information about the projects and the Next Generation Internet

IoTCrawler (https://iotcrawler.eu)
  • The European H2020 project ‘IoTCrawler’ focuses on integration and interoperability across different platforms, dynamics and reconfigurable solutions for the discovery and integration of data and services from legacy and new systems, adaptive, privacy-aware and secure algorithms and mechanisms for crawling, indexing and search in distributed IoT systems.
  • IoTCrawler provides extensive development and demonstrations with focus on Industry 4.0, social IoT, smart city and smart energy.
  • IoTCrawler seeks to generate a high impact through research excellence, innovation and technology advancement. It addresses open challenges and issues in crawling, discovery, indexing, semantic integration and security/privacy/trust in an IoT ecosystem.
  • IoTCrawler achieves this through end-user engagement via its industry and city partners, trials and collaborative scenario developments, validations and showcasing.
  • IoTCrawler also offers new business models and will extend the product line of industry and SME partners as well as create a wider awareness and third-party exploitation via dissemination and standardisation activities by providing open and generic enablers and APls.  
The Next Generation Internet (NGI)
  • The NGI initiative, launched by the European Commission in the autumn of 2016, aims to shape the future internet as an interoperable platform ecosystem embodying the values that Europe holds dear: openness, inclusivity, transparency, privacy, cooperation and protection of data.
  • The NGI drives this technological revolution and ensures the progressive adoption of advanced concepts and methodologies spanning the domains of artificial intelligence, IoT, interactive technologies and more, while contributing to making the future internet more human-centric (https://www.ngi.eu/about/).
  • NGI POINTER is one of several H2020 projects supporting the initiative. The project focuses on changing the underlying fabric of the internet and the web itself by supporting promising bottom-up projects capable of building on top of SOA Research, scalable protocols and tools to assist in the practical transition or migration to new or updated technologies.
Qualification requirements
Applicants for a postdoctoral position hold a PhD degree in digital business development, design or computer science; however, industry and specifically entrepreneurship experience can alleviate the need for a specific field. For instance, previous design research work on new digital services for renewable energy use in buildings is an added advantage.   

Applicants are encouraged to describe how their work is linked to constructive design research, internet, open source, human centric design, smart energy/home/city, entrepreneurship and/or digital business development.

BTECH is located in the business-oriented and entrepreneurial city of Herning. The department excels in business and engineering disciplines and pays particular attention to company collaborations. Our incubator Business Factory launches around 15 new businesses every year.

We influence society through business development and technology. Terms of employment
The appointment is made in accordance with the Memorandum on Job Structure for Academic Staff at Danish Universities as well as the circular on the Collective Agreement for Academics Employed by the State (in Danish).
