Manage Your IT Investments Through Digital Options

Dr. Lars Mathiassen from Georgia State University, US

It is inherently difficult for a firm to identify, prioritize and realize investments in new IT capability. This presentation demonstrates how digital-options thinking can be used as an easy-to-understand and very powerful method for managing such investment decisions. The method draws on classical options thinking within finance and translates them into the IT space. The presentation will cover the underlying theory, the practical method, and demonstrate how the method was used to identify and prioritize IT capability investments into a large dairy production chain in Northern Sweden.  Based on the presented method and example, participants will be able to adopt the method for usage within their own firm.

Dr. Mathiassen is a Georgia Research Alliance Eminent Scholar, Professor at the Department of Computer Information Systems and co-founder of the Center for Process Innovation at Georgia State University, US. Prior to coming to GSU, Dr. Mathiassen was a professor at Aalborg University, Denmark and has published several books and scientific papers on software engineering, IT-management and digital innovation. He has over the past many years collaborated closely with many Danish firms to solve practical IT-related problems and publish new knowledge.

Søren Bækgaard Hansen, Director of Enterprise Architecture & Strategy at Arla Foods

The storyline is related to how IT investment decisions are structured at Arla and how the Enterprise Architecture & Strategy function at Arla interacts with the stakeholders in this matter. The presentation has its offset in the Enterprise Architecture function’s recent formulation of the IT strategy at Arla with the aim of ensuring clear and long term investment management. This is being executed in combination of tactical competition for resources and sequencing in the IT Project Portfolio process resulting from the project requests from a growing FMCG company.

Søren Bækgaard Hansen is the Director of Enterprise Architecture & Strategy at Arla Foods. Previously at LEGO, Deloitte Business Consulting and Vestas, he is now responsible for heading the Enterprise Architecture & Strategy office at Arla Foods. This office is part of the corporate center and connects the IT organisation and business with respect to the shared strategic agenda and ongoing business development.
