The future of the European economy is looking increasingly dismal. In the wake of the Great Recession, Europe's economy has in fact stagnated to a considerable degree – trailing behind the economy of the United States. Forecasts suggest an alarmingly low annual growth rate of about one percent over the next five years. This sincerely affects Europe and Denmark’s business environment. In addition, Europe’s enviable structural features such as the superior social safety net, leading educational facilities, and outstanding infrastructure will come under serious pressure if Europe fails to achieve higher levels of growth in the mid- to long-term.
Higher levels of growth are crucial for the future of Europe and its role as a global economic and political leader. However, if the European countries fail to tackle the key challenges concerning the financial role of the state, tax systems, the environment for startups, control over labor markets and migration policies, Europe’s growth may be put to a tough test.
The event on 26 May zooms in on these current economic challenges and aims to inspire a fruitful debate on the topic involving key stakeholders. The event brings together global thought-leaders and experts with rich experience in academia, government and global affairs. The event begins with a public lecture delivered by Professor Simeon Djankov on the key issues facing Europe and the possible solutions for how to overcome them. If enacted, these actions may be just what is needed to reinvigorate the slumping European economy. The lecture is followed by a public debate on Europe’s growth.
