Systematic review of student agency

Purpose/research question

The purpose of this project is to provide a critical review of student agency. Student agency is an ambiguous theoretical concept and a complex concept to operationalise in empirical studies of university teaching and learning. The aim is to further develop the concept and to suggest an operationalisation of student agency that can be used in a university context. The project is part of the PhD project: Student engagement in technology-supported learning activities at Aarhus BSS.

Background

Student agency is a concept that is increasingly being used in research within university teaching, and a concept that is referred to as one of several objectives for university programmes. This gives rise to an interest in what we know about agency, and how we can examine it in future.

The study is based on a systematic review of studies published at international level. Screening and analysis of studies were carried out in two steps, partly in May 2017 and partly in May/June 2018 (supplementary search).
