“I am very excited and proud to be awarded a Lundbeck Foundation 2023 Postdoc grant. This grant enables me to pursue my research interests and strengthen my collaboration with leading international researchers in the field," says Kasper Lolk, postdoc at the National Centre for Register-based Research at Aarhus BSS, Aarhus University.

Kasper Lolk conducts research into post-traumatic epilepsy, a debilitating neurological disease with serious personal and societal costs. It is unclear why some people develop epilepsy after head trauma and others don’t. This is why Kasper Lolk believes it is urgent that we learn more about the disease mechanisms.

The grant means Kasper Lolk can study how genes, the environment, and their complex interaction affect the incidence of epilepsy after head trauma. The study will also investigate whether genes and other early biomarkers can be used to detect and prevent post-traumatic epilepsy. The research is based on register data.

"The Danish registers and the iPSYCH cohort provide us with unique opportunities to study the issues involved. The project may have important implications for both clinical work and research. The overall aim is to reduce the burden of post-traumatic epilepsy, ultimately benefitting both those affected and society," says Kasper Lolk.
