Learn how to design and change the organisation to fit the strategy

During a two-day programme, you will learn the basic organisational design theory and how to apply the methods and tools of professional organisational design implementation to your own company.

The course is designed around the five phases that most projects go through – analysis, design, implementation, test and sustain. Throughout the course, the elements of the phases will be applied to participant cases. The course integrates application with state-of-the-art theory.

Programme

Day 1:

  • Introduction and set up of case study groups
  • Review organisational design theory
  • Review dianostic variables and score case individually
  • Group diagnostics on case of choice
  • Structures and new organisational forms, agile and design thinking

Day 2:

  • Facilitating the design process using deep dives and design principles
  • Case group work - map design principles
  • Using schematics and road maps and facilitating governance decisions
  • Lunch and case work discussions
  • Case group work - discuss schematics, phasing and governance and prepare presentation
  • Tools and processes to cover detailed design, change and implementation
  • Cover outstanding questions or gaps. Introduce templates and ODC.
Who should attend

Leaders, HR partners, consultants and specialists responsible for shaping the organisation to fit its organisational strategy and goals. Participants typically work in corporate HR, strategy or transformation programmes or in consultant companies.

Faculty bios

Børge Obel is a professor at the Department of Management at Aarhus BSS, Aarhus University, a visiting professor at Stanford and Duke and the Director of the Interdisciplinary Centre for Organisational Architecture. He was also the dean of the former Aarhus School of Business. He has developed and taught numerous MBA and EMBA courses and short customized courses in large corporations. He participates in organisational design projects as a consultant and is also an active board member and head of section. Furthermore, he is the owner and founder of Ecomerc Consulting that has several decades of organisational design experience.


Jesper Sylvest Sørensen has worked with the implementation of new organisations in more than 40 countries and has covered process facilitation and leading organisation design projects during the various implementation phases. He teaches HR Leadership Courses at IMD as well as a number of organisational design courses e with Andrew Campbell and Naomi Stanford. He has gained an Innovation and Strategy Execution Certification from INSEAD and has a leadership education from the Danish army. Since 2015, Jesper has worked in consulting focusing on organisational design and HR transformation in some of the largest Danish corporations.

Practical information

Participants must prepare a relevant case from their own company to be used for diagnostics and design during the course.

To ensure the best use of participant time, the course is short and dense and includes a lot of group work. This allows participants to work on individual cases and internalise the new insights.

This structure is only possible because participants have read Organizational Design: A Step-By-Step Approach, which forms the basis of the theory used on the course, and case from Microsoft prior to the course.

This is a demanding course with long days. However, it is not unusual to see participants leaving the course carrying a flipchart paper with key takeaways that they are going to apply to their organisation when they return.
