Postdoc / assistant professor position at Department of Political Science, Aarhus University 968964

The Department of Political Science at Aarhus BSS, Aarhus University in Denmark invites applications for one postdoctoral position or assistant professorship in connection with the research project Conflict and Democratization (CODE).

The position is fixed-term of either two years with limited teaching obligations (postdoctoral researcher) or three years with more extensive teaching obligations (assistant professor). The final form of the position will be decided by the head of department taking the teaching demand of the department and the qualifications of the candidate into account. The position is co-financed by Innovation Fund Denmark and Aarhus University.

The position is located at the Department of Political Science, Aarhus University. The successful candidate is expected to start by September 1 2018 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The research project - CODE
CODE is an international research group centering on how, when, and why political openings trigger instability and violent civil conflicts. It brings together almost 20 researchers, mostly situated at the Department of Political Science at Aarhus University. The affiliated researchers employ a variety of methods and disciplinary approaches (for details see the project description here). More particularly, CODE analyzes how processes of democratization and conflict escalation are connected at four different levels: the international level, the institutional level, the group level, and the individual level. It asks new questions about what Western governments and organizations can do to push for democracy while avoiding conflict. Using different data sources and methods, CODE aims to identify the cases and situations in which external actors can make a difference for peace and democracy and to shed light on the limits to what outsiders can do.

The research project is financed by Innovation Fund Denmark for the period April 1 2015 to September 30 2020 and led by Professor Jørgen Møller.

Job description
The position offers excellent opportunities to develop independent and collaborative research within the intersecting field of conflict research and political regime change.
The successful candidate will be involved in analysis at one or more of the four different levels described above, including data collection and quantitative analysis.

Your qualifications
Applicants are expected to hold (or be close to completing) a PhD in political science or a related social science discipline.
In addition to interest in conducting independent and collaborative research within the focus area of CODE, applicants should preferably have the ability to conduct state-of-the-art research within the fields of conflict research and democratization, excellent command of spoken and written English, and experience with publishing in international, peer-reviewed journals.
More particularly, proven ability to have articles accepted in top IR journals will be considered an important advantage. Strong methodological skills, especially regarding the application of sophisticated quantitative methods, and familiarity with the use of extant data sources on political instability and its potential correlates are also preferred.

In addition to a CV, a letter motivating the application (addressing the match between the candidate’s profile and the core research task of CODE), proof of PhD degree (or the near completion of a PhD degree), interested scholars should preferably provide a short research statement (max. 5 pages), which describes the research agenda the candidate proposes to pursue as part of CODE. See the other demands to the application below.
