Inspiration Day About Ways to Improve Your Lectures

Per Andersen, the vice-dean for education invites all teachers at Aarhus BSS to an inspiration day on the lecture.  

The lecture is the most widely used teaching format at Aarhus BSS, and for a lecture to be successful it must be inspiring, activating, relevant and student centred. This is the topic of the inspiration day this spring.

On the inspiration day, you will hear how three experienced lecturers have changed the traditional lecture format in order for them to support the students’ learning. After this, the inspiration day offers four workshops where you can get ideas on how to involve the students to a larger extent, and how to use technology to support the students’ learning process. Furthermore, we will work with visualization, rhetoric, the use of your voice and your body language; and we will focus on how to compose your lecture in order for it to be varied and lively.

You can choose two of the four workshops. Bring along materials, examples and/or questions from your own lectures that you would like to discuss in the workshops of your choice.

After the programme, a light lunch will be served in Stakladen.

 

The presenters and description of workshops

 

Asser Hedegaard Thomsen, Staff Specialist, Department of Forensic Medicine, HEALTH 

It is Asser’s belief that lectures are boring and useless if the students do not feel that they will need the knowledge communicated. The aim is that they should be happy that they have come to the lecture instead of staying at home reading a book. Anything else is a waste of their time – and of the lecturer’s time.
In designing the lectures, Asser focuses on clarity, applicability, curiosity, and visual quality. In his view, the largest challenge of the lecture is passive and unengaged students. However, he has found a solution to this problem – which he perhaps/perhaps not will unveil.

John Vestergaard Møller, Associate Professor, Department of Business Development and Technology, BSS

For John it is central that the lecture is not one-way-communication, but involves the students in dialogue-based interaction.
His teaching is classic and the blackboards are frequently used: His subject, statistics, is hierarchically organised in the sense that any argumentation builds on definitions, prerequisites, and results from previous lectures. He gets a perfect opportunity to deliver the right arguments, the structure and the general view via his step-by-step use of the blackboard and his dialogue with the students. This dialogue starts automatically when the students must help him find the right arguments and the results. This format makes it much easier to maintain the students’ attention in the ongoing fight with e-mails, text messages, social media, etc. than does “death by 50 slides”.
During the last couple of years, John has been using polling and kahoot-tests in his lectures. The students like this, and the effect is enormous: it strengthens the dialogue and the teaching becomes more varied. Furthermore, both the students and the teacher get an impression of whether the learning outcome have been reached and of the problems that are still there. More students than previously demonstrate a better grasp of the topic as a whole at the exam – the core aim of the lectures.

Lene Vase Toft, professor with Special Responsibilities, Ph.D. Department of Psychology and Behavioural Sciences, BSS

Lene teaches neuropsychology, a 10 ECTS credit passed/failed course. When she took over the course, students seemed to believe that they did not need to read the set literature, but only had to listen to the lectures to pass the exam. Since it is a 10 ECTS course, Lene found it more appropriate that the students should demonstrate their capability of defining and explaining central concepts within the subject and relate them to one another. On this basis, Lene described the course in accordance with the SOLO taxonomy and its second highest level, the relational level, that is. The individual lectures are designed on the basis of the alignment principle: a strong connection between the literature, the intended learning outcomes, the teaching methods applied, the media used and the exam. The students (around 250) are continuously activated through various exercises and the use of videos and experiments. They are introduced to the exam as possible exam questions are presented in each lecture. Furthermore, a four hour block is dedicated to ‘the good and the less good exam paper’; here the students in pairs and larger groups evaluate exam papers from previous years.


Track 1: Analogous tools (with Ole Lauridsen, CUL)

Help the students take a break from the tempting social media – give them analogous, involving, and relevant lectures. This workshop gives you inspiration, that is, tips and tricks on how to lecture vividly and engagingly in an analogous lecture room.

Track 2: Digital tools (with Ole Bjælde, STLL)

We have many digital tool at our disposal, but it is not the technology as such that makes a lecture memorable. It is how you design the teaching-learning activities. This workshop focuses on how technology can help the students and support their learning process; a range of different tools will be presented.

Track 3: More structure - less crowding of information (with Linda Greve CUL)

Vary your lecture style. Rooted in rhetorics this workshop focuses on composing lectures with the important parts of curriculum and using visualisation, student engagement and structure to the full.

Track 4: Voice and body language (with Helga Halkjær free lance expert in nonverbal communication) (only in Danish)

Your voice and your body language have an impact both on yourself and on your students. This workshop focuses on how to manage the lecture as regards voice, body, motion, nervousness, motion and the relation to many persons at a time.
