Three visiting researchers of the highest international calibre coming to BSS

In 2013–2014, the School of Business and Social Sciences at Aarhus University will be welcoming three elite researchers, experts in the fields of labour economics, macro-economics and organisational theory and strategic management. A grant of DKK 1.3 million from the Villum Fonden foundation will be used to finance the three visits.

In 2013–2014, the research and teaching environment at the Department of Economics and Business and the Interdisciplinary Center for Organizational Architecture (ICOA) at the School of Business and Social Sciences (BSS) will have the opportunity to continue expanding its working relationships with three international figures who are experts in their chosen fields.

Thanks to a grant of DKK 1.3 million from the Villum Fonden foundation, Associate Professor Federico Ciliberto of Virginia University in the United States and Leif Danziger of Ben Gurion University in Israel will each be spending six months at the Department of Economics and Business as visiting lecturers. In addition, Professor Charles C. Snow of the University of Pennsylvania in the United States will be guesting ICOA for two months.

Professor Per Baltzer Overgaard, Vice Dean for Research and Talent Development at the School of Business and Social Sciences, is delighted with the grant from the Villum Fonden foundation.

“The special thing about this particular grant is that it will be of long-term benefit to young researchers and students in particular, because over and above the established research collaboration projects, the three guests will be involved in postgraduate and PhD teaching. In addition, they will act as sounding boards and counsellors for PhD students and young researchers,” he explains.

About the visiting researchers:

Associate Professor Federico Ciliberto
Associate Professor Federico Ciliberto will be spending a total of six months researching and teaching at the Department of Economics and Business, three months in 2013 and three months in 2014. The research in which he will be involved is primarily centred on a project he is working on together with Professor Helena Skyt Nielsen and Associate Professor Marianne Simonsen. The three researchers are applying unique Danish registry data to establish how much colleagues at Danish workplaces influence each other with regard to fertility decisions. The research is of particular relevance to employers who are seeking the optimal mix of gender and age among their staff, and to political decision-makers whose work is focused on the overall effect of family-friendly policies.

In parallel with this, Associate Professor Ciliberto will be teaching students in a new master’s topic: Empirical Industrial Organization: Implementing Frontier Methodologies in MatLab.

Professor Leif Danziger
Professor Leif Danziger – a leading international figure in the fields of macro-economics and labour economics – has previously both conducted research and taught at the Department of Economics and Business, in both 2011 and 2012. This time, he will be visiting the department from 31 July until 31 December.

Professor Danziger is already working on a number of research projects in collaboration with Professor Bent Jesper Christensen, Associate Professor Henning Bunzel and PhD student Ritwik Banerjee. In addition to this, it is expected that Professor Danziger’s visit will help reinforce contact between the university and the international research network even further. Over and above his wide-ranging research plans, Professor Danziger will also be counselling students working on their theses and dissertations, and teaching the optional master’s subject Macro-economics II.

Professor Charles C. Snow
Professor Charles C. Snow is a highly regarded international expert in the field of organisational theory and strategic management. He co-authored the groundbreaking 1978 book entitled Organizational Strategy, Structure, and Process – a work that has helped define this particular field of research. From 16 October until 16 December 2013, he will be continuing the work to strengthen international presence at the ICOA research centre.

Professor Snow’s research has always been at the cutting edge, and he is currently focusing on new forms of organisation, organisational innovation and collaborative organisations. The plan is for him to write a theoretically innovative research article entitled Extending theories on design of collaborative communities in collaboration with Professor Børge Obel, Head of Centre, and Associate Professor Dorthe Døjbak Håkonsson. In addition, Professor Charles C. Snow will be teaching Executive MBA students and others.
